Kurt Cobain was very popular during his time alive, Rolling Stones calling him "the most important artist of the 90s".

Kurt Cobain took the title in 2006 as top-earning deceased celebrity over Elvis with the release of their Nirvana song catalogue. Along with the Nirvana catalogue, the "Unplugged in New York" album was released after Cobain's death, which ended up at the top of the charts.

Nirvana was also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
